I'm mindful that I'm viewing Japanese narrative and characters through a Western lens, so my assumptions and expectations may be misleading - for example, about what constitutes "passive". Or for that matter, what constitutes a "Mary Sue", since so many manga/anime characters seem to be attractive, brilliant, and athletic, all at once. :) (But then, I am not an enemy of Mary Sue's.)
