I didn't find the sexism embarassing. As infinitarian says, if it's based on the comedies of Plautaus than, if anything, the sexism is probably toned down. It's been a while since I studied Plautus, but his plays were pretty outrageous.
The stage production I saw (again, going back a few years) didn't seem embarassingly sexist to me, so, yeah, perhaps they took the mickey out of some of it.
