Tried and failed a second time to get through A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966). (I keep renting it thinking it's Rinse the Blood off my Toga, which is something entirely different.) Despite some killer lines and an excellent cast, it just doesn't hold onto our attention tightly enough. The relentless, teeth-grating sexism doesn't help. We did hang on long enough to see Pertwee deliver his handful of lines, though. He looks alarmingly hunky in his Centurion gear.

Date: 2005-09-10 08:34 am (UTC)I've seen the movie and the stage show of Forum. I find it pretty funny. Admittedly, the movie is a bit silly, in that they're trying to pack in the guest stars and cameos.
The stage show is better, I think, because it's more condensed. more tightly focussed and structured. I saw a touring production a few years ago. I think it might have had Jon English in it... I know it also had Jonathan Biggins it in. Seeing him do "Lovely" was hysterical.
I'd give the stage show a try if you can find a production.
