Date: 2007-04-12 09:44 pm (UTC)I'd like to see this mainly because I think I should control my blood sugar more closely, and I'm not sure where I should start. And while I know the obvious place would be with my personal physician, my last physical and blood work cost me $600, so I'm not in a hurry to just swing by for some questions. Unfortunately, that was the bill after my insurance kicked in, too. I'm also not sure what I should be looking signs I need to look out for. I don't know what it feels like when my blood sugar gets low, or high, or what have you- I just what it feels like when I suddenly get really shakey and should eat something.

Date: 2007-04-12 10:52 pm (UTC)The shakes are horrible. I've had 'em for years, long before I was diagnosed with diabetes - they were the first warning sign. A doctor put me on a low GI diet at that point, which helped stave off the actual diabetes for some years, and helps me control my blood sugar very well.

Date: 2007-04-12 11:50 pm (UTC)By changing some of the high GI foods in my diet to low GI foods, I was able to stop getting the shakes; now I use it to help prevent my blood sugar from shooting up and down. The basic trick is to substitute low GI foods for high GI foods, and have one at each meal - that can be as simple as having your sandwich on rye/sourdough/multigrain bread instead of white.
There are a ton of books on this, and also lots of helpful info online:
