The guvmint have come up with a new and even more loony plan to prevent refugees touching Australian soil with their filthy persecuted feet: an exchange with the US for Cuban refugees held at Guantanamo Bay. I just heard 'em on the radio, deriding the Opposition for, uncharacteristically, opposing the plan, on the grounds that not going ahead with the swap will encourage people smugglers. Which only puts the cherry on the ice cream of the madness: what people smuggler wouldn't promise their victims a new home in the world's most prosperous country?

Date: 2007-04-18 09:53 pm (UTC)Do any would-be trafficked persons even know that Australian immigration is following a policy where unlawful non-citizens attempting to reach Australia but intercepted off the mainland will not be allowed onto the mainland?
I'd like to see a bipartisan commission investigate (1) Australia's ethical responsibilities regarding unlawful non-citizens, (2) Australia's pragmatic interests regarding unlawful non-citizens and (3) possible consistent policies which satisfy both. Because I am not satisfied with our current policy, nor have I been for some time.
