According to a piece in Crikey today, the settlements that will be under the 5 year leases fall smack dab in the middle of the area desired by both mining companies and as deposits for nuclear waste.
It is no coincidence that many of the communities targeted for “military style intervention” are also areas that are heavily targeted for minerals exploration, particularly uranium, as well as for potential nuclear waste dumps. This includes Western Arnhem Land and Central Australia, where numerous known uranium deposits are being actively investigated by various wanna-be uranium producers.
It's typical of any government policy, surely - don't fix the cause, paper over the problem by passing meaningless laws which only harm those who obey them.
True of many government policies, especially around election time. Not true of them all, of course, or civilisation would have long since collapsed, and people would be eating each other like hyenas, as the Egyptians put it IIRC.
