Just a quick thanks for everyone's comments to my IBARW postings, especially all the book and movie recs! And for all the discussion - I'm learning a lot. (I've only had to banninate one Islamophobic creep. >:-)

I've been reading your recommendations as well as the discussions here with great interest - it's been a real learning experience.

Of course, the main reason I'm commenting is that I'm a total Pembleton fangirl from way back. :D H:LotS had some fascinating discussions about race throughout (along with, y'know, the billions of other fascinating discussions on that show), and I've always thought that Pembleton never really got his fair share of fandom, considering what a brilliant character he is. It was nice to see some of those quotes again, too!

A sign of progress?

I don't know if you all would consider it a sign of progress or not, but the space shuttle crew that launched today has an African-American and two women. As far as I can tell, no one seems to be making a big deal about it.

There have been other shuttle crews with diversity over the years. The last _Challenger_ mission in 1986 (the disaster) had two women, a Black man, and an Asian-American man. The last _Columbia_ mission in 2003 (the other disaster) had two women (one born in India), a Black man, and an Israeli. I know there are other examples, but those are the ones I can give quickest without researching NASA's flight history.
