"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel.

"I have always needed fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. A new high-end Cadillic will go ten or fifteen miles faster if you give it a full dose of 'Carmelita'."

- Hunter S. Thompson

When HST is in his pursuing justice mode, he reminds me of Xanthian; when he goes off into one of his mad pseudo-autobiographical stories about drugs and crime, he reminds me of Jerry Cornelius.

That's fabulous - thanks! (Smith is said to have begun undressing himself with the sheer excitement of his discovery, though this is probably apocryphal. :-)

Well, Archimedes ran naked throught the streets of Athens when he discovered the law of displacement. Is there a corealtion between making an exciting discovery and getting naked? Does anyone out there know?

I would have to say "yes" to that one.

So, in fact, there *is* a correlation between making an exciting discovery and getting naked, but the causation runs in the opposite direction to what [livejournal.com profile] murasaki_1966 had assumed?

I'm particularly interested in the urge to throw off things when making a greatdiscovery, or having a religous experience. There seems to be a correlation between huge emotion and stripping your clothes off.

And, yes, I know Archimedes was already naked. It amuses me that he didn't grab a towel (did the Ancient Greeks have towels?) before running through the streets. Now I know the Greeks viewed nudity differently to us, but a naked shouting philosopher must have been a bit of a shock. Nudity in Ancient Greece was kept for home, sporting events and training, and the public baths/gymnasium. At least as far as I'm aware.

"I've found it! I've found it!"
"Hardly worth the effort, was it, dear?"

most people would simply remain in whatever state of dress they were in when the experience struck
