While OS I read Niall Griffith's novel Sheepshagger. It turns out there's a French translation of the book, titled Ianto L'Enragé - roughly, "Ianto the Maniac". The English title would probably be bizarre and meaningless translated directly into French. :-)

Surely the French would have an equivalent term? I mean, it's not like there's no sheep there...

I suspect the French don't spend a lot of time insulting the Welsh! :-)

True... but they do insult the Belgians! And the Swiss, various internal ethnic groups, anyone else who doesn't speak French...

This is the thing - if the French call, say, the Belgians "sheepshaggers", then they'll be very confused when the book turns out to be set in Wales. :-)

True - but then I would be expecting the book to be set in NZ, so that goes for everyone outside the UK.

I take it the book is set in Wales then, and not, say, NSW or NZ?

Maybe they should re-title it for the Antipodean market as well then... heh.

Regrettably, the ruder French words are my vocabulary weakness. My French friends during my year in Bordeaux were all far too politely spoken, damn them.
