From the Sydney Morning Herald: Raining cats and dogs as crisis hits

If you're in New South Wales, there's never been a better time to adopt a cat or dog. High rents are forcing owners to surrender - or abandon - their pets, and there's an especially bad "kitten season" right now. The Cat Protection Society (in Enmore) has been deluged, the RSPCA is has run out of room. (Their shelter at Yagoona in Sydney is open until 6 pm on Saturdays.)

(I so badly want to run out right now and adopt at least one more cat, but there are so many sensible reasons not to. Maybe we could get a horrible old one that's not going to last long anyway? Actually, seriously, I wonder if we could temporarily foster a kitten, or if Frank and Tim would eat it?)

ETA: You may be able to get discount desexing from the RSPCA (or another organisation) - check out their info.

We desperately want to have another cat, but lovely Maine Coon cat Isis was taken from her mother at a few weeks then abused by her first owner's roommates, so she would destroy any other cat. :(

The kitten would probably bash up your boys. I've seen kittens stare down big tomcats.

I know about the cat problem. I've just had to help my neighbour find homes for four beautiful black kittens. It was heartbreaking. val has to surrender the mother as well, but when she got back from her family crisis we went back to the CPS and re-adopted Missy. I had to go outside, because all these lovely cats needed homes, and I couldn't take them home with me. One of my friends had to surrender her black cat and she is still heartbroken.

Seriously, if people are going to be renting for longer and possibly never buying a house, then the tenancy laws and rules on pets need to be changed.

If anyone out there is thinking of adopting: there is a most handsome ginger tom who needs a home. Also two lovely Bengali/Showshoe cat crosses who are very very pretty.

Kittens tend to get a lot of leeway with older cats, mostly because they're small and less threatening. We've managed to successfully integrate Zinda in with our older two, though you will have to deal with a bit of territory dispute and the Hissing Olympics for a few weeks while the heirarchy is established. It's not that bad, really.

I'm never gonna convince Jon of this, but Frank and Tim should be GAY PARENTS so much!!!

THEY SO SHOULD

Also, opposite sex cats tend to get along better. So if you get a girl, they may feel less bothered by that idea than another male.
