The pushmi-pullyu. As a small child I didn't grasp the pun and pronounced this "push-mipple-you". There was also a device in a Donald Duck comic called the "enlarging machine" which I called the "enargling machine".

ETA: Mum reckons I actually said "pushapummel". he he he

It's NOT an enargling machine?

Shit.

I have a lot of stuff to fix tonight...

In the fantastic free online game The Kingdom of Loathing (http://www.kingdomofloathing.com) there are a million zillion puns and pop culture references.

One of my faves is similar to the one you're describing.

In order to get across the Orc Chasm to Beyond the Valley of the Orc Chasm one must get an abridged dictionary.

One then takes it to the Untinkerer, who produces from it a bridge and a dictionary. One then uses the former to cross the chasm and later uses the latter to cause "Spelling Damage" to 133t creatures.

Hilarity ensues.

Oh wow, I thought I was the only person who completely missed puns like the pushmi-pullyu. I didn't get that one until my father asked me what I'd been reading, and then mentioned that the pushmi-pullyu was his favorite critter in the book.

Same thing happened recently--I read the name "Kreatcher" in Harry Potter, and never realized that it was "creature" until I said it aloud in a conversation with someone.

Kreacher I did manage to get - in fact, it cracked me up every time I read it. :-) It's funny what shoots over your head, though. A mate of mine used to post online as "kalima", which I read as "ka-LEE-ma" for ages. It's not, it's "Kali Ma". Der

Gods, yes... I did the same (only in German). I read "Relakme" instead of "Reklame" (advertising) for the longest time, and "lebendig" (alive) as leben-dick (not English lol) (fat with life)... and dropped syllables left right and center to make words which made sense to me in the context I had, even if they became something else, and some other context, entirely. Ah, the fun! :D

When I was younger I refused to eat my veggie-poodles.

Actually, OT, the only way I'd eat cabbage was if my mother shredded it and mixed it into mashed potatoes. I could never understand why my friends' mothers' mash never had long stringy green bits in it.
