I'm a technical writer rather than a fiction writer, but I find the part after the frist draft to be the toughest and most painful part of the process. For me, there's nothing more jading in writing than getting the reviews of the paper back and seeing the problems you have to fix before it can be published.
I must say, though, that the thought of revising the 15,000 word opus on the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season where I was editor/chief writer gave me thought akin to despair.
