What do you think of Lawrence's latest lectures? I find his emphasis on Who as "empirical" or "extrapolatory" to be completely odd. The show was *always* about craziness and mood for me, although yes, I'd agree that the move towards the personalisation of mood as (the Doctor's) individual emotion is a self-conscious form of fan-service that the original series never had.
