I haven't seen Miami Vice 3.6 Shadow in the Dark since high school, but it stuck in my brain at the time, and I'm so pleased to discover it still works: it's atmospheric and stylish; has marvellous, simple, doomladen music; the dialogue avoids being too on-the-nose; Don Johnson's acting is adequate to the task; and the guy who plays the bizarre burglar who draws Crockett into his madness, Vincent Caristi, does an extraordinary job, almost entirely without dialogue. Even the viewer feels like there's method in his madness by the end of the story.

Also, Castillo does have brown eyes. Was Edward James Olmos wearing contacts then? Is he wearing them now? wtf?

Ooh, I can answer that one! I just read it recently. He wears blue contacts in BSG to match his "son" (Jamie Bamber - who dyes his hair darker and changes his accent for the same reason) and to look less hispanic. Apparently.

So yes, his eyes are brown.

"To look less Hispanic" connotes something far different -- and more disturbing -- than two actors making minor cosmetic changes to help them look more related (or, rather, to make them look less unrelated). EJO is in no way ashamed of his heritage, but he is playing a role and donning a costume to do so.

I agree--I was quoting that from what I read. (Probably should have put it in quotes, but it's not an exact quote. I just remember the hispanic bit because I wondered why they put it that way. Wish I could remember where I read it now so I could get the exact quote.*)

Possibly it was said because Jamie is very clearly NOT hispanic? I dunno.

*could I say the word "quote" one more time?

I totally remember that episode--that's the one with the raw steak and the flour, right? It made quite the impression on me when I first watched it.

I recently bought all of MV on DVD and look forward to watching it. It's one of the few shows I watched in the eighties (think Airworld, Riptide, etc.) that actually seems to hold up well.

I think Miami Vice has such a strong style of its own that it's achieved a sort of timelessness, like an old film, even though it's also one of the most eighties things imaginable.
