As the gods are my witness, I'm going to do that to my readers one day.

??? if by 'that' you mean 'make everyone really upset by a pointless character death'...

there are much better, much more effective ways of connecting emotionally to your audience and inspiring their passion than simply killing off a character. that way's just the cheapest and the easiest. it's like hitting the skinny kid with the glasses; it's just too easy.

as [livejournal.com profile] smallship1 said...you may follow tw's example; personally, i'd prefer to be better than that. kill off a character if the story absolutely demands it...but NOT just to get a big emotionally manipulative reaction / amp up the ratings. >:P

If I can write something which has people waking up at three in the morning in a muddle of grief and anxiety I'm going to die a very happy scribbler.

i think you and i have very different motivations in terms of our writing goals, there.

anyway, not related to the current discussion at all, but i've been meaning to tell you for a while now how utterly adorable your icon is. :) makes me squee inside every time i see it...was that an actual character on that site, or did you add the wee ginger 'fro to it?

also - jesus christ, woman, GET TO BED!! *makes you a warm drink and shoos you off bedwards*

Ginger 'fro dude just popped up in the middle of the Sims review, I think, so I snavelled him without delay. (It is actually a he - a she would have sort of Dalek bumps. :)

*wanders about blearily*

I once made a reader throw up. It remains my greatest technical accomplishment.

Thank you -- this was the first thing that made me laugh after finishing Day Five.

Gods, I needed that.

I pulled a muscle laughing at Caitlin Moran's review. (Really!)
