Angry, Angry hippos are responsible for about 500 deaths a year, apparently. Not surprising when you can consider their tusks are as wide around as baseball bats and they can outrun a horse...

Oh yah - that's why the Egyptian demon, the Devourer of the Damned, has the mouth of a croc, the claws of a lion, and the arse end of a hippo!

(That photo's funny as hell - but only because the gamekeeper lived to tell the tale!)

Indeed! I also have a magazine article about a nature photographer who accidentally got between two irate boar hippos having a territorial disagreement- one grabbed him by the leg and flung him *40 feet* out of the water and into a bush. He had a hole in his leg he could pass a coke bottle through without touching the edges of the wound...

Also, stupid tourist:

Or, vulgo, "Nilpferdarsch". ("nil-pferd-arsch")

Sometimes, I love my father tongue. :D

I know that 'pferd' is horse in German, therefore 'nilpferd' is hippopotamus. Does that translate to 'river-horse' the way it does in some languages?

Therefore 'hinterteil' = arse end. Good to know.

It translates to "Nile Horse", as in the river. And "Hinterteil" would literally be "back end"... but arse end sounds much better. ;)

Strictly speaking it's not, but you can easily combine existing words and make them your own
