I fear that the news cycle may be moving on, but the crisis isn't over. Many of the men are now injured, some badly, as a result of their violent removal to the new detention centres, along with existing illnesses and injuries which continue to go untreated. Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) are there but have been denied access to the men.

I don't think it's moving on just yet, at least I hope not.

I cannot believe they killed a pet dog during all this - I know that is a really strange thing to fixate on in the midst of all this appallingness, but for some reason it just feels like yet another line, yet another boundary, yet another step into the abyss.

Seriously, what next? Actual death camps rather than just our offshore gulag?

I don't know what it is about killing an animal for no reason that makes it so morally outrageous. Maybe it's just that we're so used to all the indignities, injuries, and general cruelty heaped on the human beings in the camps that it takes something new to catch our hearts.

It amazes me that no-one has died during the last month. MSF are providing medical treatment at the local hospital now, thank heaves.

I think it's almost that the scale of the humans involved is just so large, and tangled up with so much other crap... but a pet. It's one pet. It's a dog, and most of us have had pets, and many of them have been dogs. It's relatable in a way that we sometimes don't manage with people in larger numbers, particularly people who don't look like us, speak our language, follow our gods.

It's one thing.

Not for the first time I'm wondering if Australia having a coup to remove Dutton et al would be so bad... I think probably yes, but Dear Lord, this is just so appalling and even with the ongoing protests and calls and so forth you still end up feeling so helpless.
