Last night was the first installment of Magus: exploring the world of the occult, a proper course from Sydney University's Continuing Education thingy, taught by a real historian and everything. Dr French turns out to be engaging, funny, and sympathetic to what he calls the "alternative spiritual history of the West". Gems from the first lecture included summing up where people's impressions of the occult come from in one word: "Buffy" - and the tale of his dwarf-rubbing grandma.

Borrowing from the tradition of taking Biblical quotes out of their context, I'd like to commend a letter writer in today's Herald for suggesting we "try to think about God and his love with our Bibles shut". What an interesting idea.

Another great moment was someone commenting on the splendid phrase "budgie smugglers", used to describe Speedos: " Thank heavens Rex Craig wasn't smuggling a cockatoo."

Earlier, Jon sent me this intriguing link on the original ending intended for the Dark Phoenix storyline:

Dark Phoenix: The Director's Cut

Just now I visited the IMDB to see if there was any info on the next X-movie, and discovered some loser whinging about how the movies have changed stuff from the comix:

But most people watching these movies haven't even READ the comics. It's sickening to think that there's a world of children (and adults) who think this is the way the story is SUPPOSED to go.

Ironically, the way the story actually went wasn't the way the story was SUPPOSED to go!

I can't believe, after so many variations and iterations of the X-Mens' stories, after so many retcons, that anyone clings to the hallucination that they're a documentary. The same thing will happen if Davies rewrites one line of Doctor Who. The time to get out of fandom is NOW.
