More from the Guardian Weekly, this time on the down side of GM crops in Argentina:
Superweed warning as GM soya 'miracle' in Argentina turns sour
On the plus side, soy production boomed, large-scale farmers made a ton of badly-needed cash, and the plants countered soil erosion. On the minus side, twice the dose of herbicide is now needed, profitable soy has replaced subsistence crops, small farmers have been pushed off the land or seen their crops destroyed, soil bacteria are dying off, there's a risk of superweeds, and herbicide-resistant soy is itself a weed.
