Text online here. Notes to self:

- God gives Noah and sons dominion over living things, just as he did to Adam; like Adam, they're the first humans in a new world. A difference is that God now tells Noah he can eat meat as well as veg.

- He also establishes the basis of kashrut and the death penalty for murder.

- The rainbow as a symbol of God's promise not to flood the Earth again is lovely - it's like a little post-it note so He doesn't forget. :-)

- Ham has apparently inadvertently broken a very serious taboo by seeing his father naked. He might've done better to put the bedclothes over Noah and tip-toe out rather than fessing up. (It's hard to see why Ham should be held responsible for Noah's druken nudity.)

I mentioned the divine compassion which saves humanity from divine wrath. In Gilgamesh, the gods regret destroying humanity:

"Ishtar shrieked like a woman in childbirth,
the sweet-voiced Mistress of the Gods wailed:
'The olden days have alas turned to clay,
because I said evil things in the Assembly of the Gods!
How could I say evil things in the Assembly of the Gods,
ordering a catastrophe to destroy my people!!
No sooner have I given birth to my dear people
than they fill the sea like so many fish!'
The gods--those of the Anunnaki--were weeping with her,
the gods humbly sat weeping, sobbing with grief(?),
their lips burning, parched with thirst."

But all is not lost, because the cunning trickster god Ea/Enki defiantly sent a secret warning to build the ark. He tells the gods:

"How, how could you bring about a Flood without consideration
Charge the violation to the violator,
charge the offense to the offender,
but be compassionate lest (mankind) be cut off,
be patient lest they be killed."

In other words, don't kill the innocent along with the guilty because you're angry. This is also a theme in The Destruction of Mankind, when Ra tells his Eye (Sekhmet / Hathor) to stop slaughtering humans once the sacreligious rebels have been dealt with; when she won't, divine trickery is again needed to save humanity.
