Genesis 32
Sep. 2nd, 2004 07:32 pmThe text: Genesis 32.
My crummy summary: Jacob returns to find Esau waiting with an army. He prays but also sensibly organises some bribes. Overnight he wrestles with a man / an angel / God and receives the new name of Israel.
Notes to self:
- Given the business about the sinew, I think that "thigh" here is actually not a euphemism. The wrestling suggests some sort of spiritual crisis though.
- I've been reading a little on angels, and the ambiguity about whether it's a angel or God Himself seems to be a common topic of discussion (eg Exodus 3, in which the burning bush is inhabited first by the angel of the Lord, then by God).
