My aunt and uncle are home from Phuket, and are both fine.
People of faith continue to struggle with the event. The Archbishop of Canterbury has
sensible things to say: that of course such an event tests peoples' faith, and should do so.
Not quite so sensible, but interesting reading, is a piece by Boris Johnson on having
no-one to blame for the disaster. It's telling to watch him take the road of from "We're not responsible for global warming" to "We may as well just go extinct". Now that's a victim mentality. It's also hilarious how no-one has actually blamed the quake on global warming, but he can nonetheless "sense their silent frustration". (He's wrong about the Mesopotamian Flood, too - it wasn't our fault.)
