Luther Arkwright
Jul. 11th, 2006 03:25 pmBought myself a copy of Big Finish's audio adaptation of The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, with David Tennant in the title role. I haven't read the original graphic novel (yet) so can't compare the audio to the original, but after some initial cynicism ("Hey! This is just like Jerry Cornelius!") I was hooked. The comics, originally published in the late seventies and eighties, were obviously a huge influence, not least on certain other Doctor Who novelists. :-) The X-Men spin-off Excalibur was surely much inspired by it. There's some spot-on use of the audio medium to evoke psychic weirdness. There's also Paul Darrow as a sexually perverted power-crazed maniac ("Harder, you strumpet!"), India Fisher having much more interesting things to do than be Charley bloody Pollard, and the memorable exchange "We make love now?" "Can we at least get into the shade first?"
