"Race" = "Species" ?!

Research question folks! I'm trying to work out where and when fantasy and SF started using the term "races" to mean "species". (Just spotted it in Babylon 5 last night.) D&D does, but did the game get it from Tolkien? And does J.K. Rowling use the term "races" when she's talking about humans, centaurs, elves, etc? Your assistance appreciated! (If you can quote from Tolkien or Rowling I will kiss your toes.)
