The more history I absorb
Aug. 21st, 2013 02:53 pmthe more I wish I'd studied history. (My last gasp was the Tudors in Year Eight.) I recently saw a gag where a still from some film, with the subtitle "These white people are dangerous", was matched with the caption "Basic summary of history". A wry acceptance / description of the disasters wrought by European colonialism, or a Eurocentric, parochial view of history which reduces it to the last half a millennium? Is my impression that, for the first millennium and a half CE or so, Europe is actually not doing much of interest in world terms, and the action is in Africa and the New World (and I'll bet Asia too), approximately correct, or that is too the result of my lack of nous? Dammit, there are only so many Very Short Introductions one can read in a day.
