The Australian government has been ordered by the UN to release 46 refugees (mostly Sri Lankan Tamils) who have been held for over four years, rehabilitate them, and compensate them. Found guilty of almost 150 violations of international law, the guvmint has also been given 180 days to provide assurances the same won't happen again.

The violations were illegal detention; no effective judicial remedies for illegal detention; and inhuman or degrading treatment in detention. The detention has been "cumulatively inflicting serious psychological harm" on the refugees.

In other news, asylum seeker families have been sent to Nauru, and unaccompanied minors will be sent there "before long", breaking even more international laws.

btw, if this stuff makes steam come out of your ears, the progressive group GetUp! is campaigning around refugees. Letters to newspapers large and small are also valuable, as are letters to your local member.
