Some good news and reasons to be hopeful. :)

GetUp! - End Manus: "Recently, upon request, GetUp travelled to the Inverbrackie detention facility to interview asylum seeker families about their recent experiences on Manus Island." Brief video of interview with detainees, who are held incommunicado. GetUp! also reports that all children and many adults have now been removed from the dangerous facility on Manus Island.

Posting these in haste, as the SMH seems to be taking items down shortly after publication on their Web site. Don't bookmark these to read later - save them to your computer.

If you only have time to read one, read this one - it's full of gems. Surrealist approaches to refugee policy: "... the Department of Immigration and Citizenship has not been processing asylum applications by boat arrivals for quite some time, not since 13 August 2012... How can Senator Carr know that people do not have genuine refugee claims when they haven't yet been given the opportunity to present them?"

Immigration Minister Tony Burke signals review of all asylum seeker policy. Importantly, he "distanced himself from Foreign Minister Bob Carr's claim that the government had already decided on 'harder-edged' assessments of refugee claims, insisting an independent review of the system had not been completed."

Courts react with glee to tighter asylum rules and Mother's case to test detention power - briefly, both items are about the government's ability to detain people indefinitely without charge or trial. "It will be argued detention is not authorised under existing laws and is unconstitutional because the courts, not the government, have exclusive power to detain people indefinitely."
