I've started work on The Novel That Could Not Be Written, aka Pepper. Digging around on the puter, I've found versions of the story at least as old as Male Chicks / Prince Charm / Strange Flesh, which I first concocted in 2000. I really am starting to believe that, after the exceptional luck, encouragement, and ease of the Doctor Who novels, I've spent the last decade doing the hard work of learning to write.

You know I think a lot of authors have that experience. That initial burst of success followed by "how did I do that?" Understanding craft and creating a career is a much longer journey. It's kind of necessary probably to go through that if you want depth and versatility to your oevre though, I guess.

It's a balancing act - freshness and energy against experience and skill.

This hits home more than a little right now. Every time I sit down anywhere near the book I kind of want to freak out because suddenly I no longer know what I'm doing.

(All of which is to say it encourages me seeing someone else say what you've said. Helps me breathe. Yes.)

It was easier when I didn't know that I didn't know what I was doing!
