Manus Island police state they are about to charge three or four men with the murder of Reza Barati.
An interview with a detainee on Manus Island, and photographs of some of the injured, offer another frightening glimpse of the violence. The detainees are providing their own security, cooking, and cleaning to avoid further contact with the locals. Audio recordings from the nights before the violence suggest the detainees' protests were not violent.

Australian Geoffrey Eames has resigned as Nauru's chief justice. A new book, The Undesirables by Mark Isaacs, describes chaotic conditions at the newly re-opened Nauru detention centre in late 2012.

The Department of Immigration has apologised for publishing the personal details of thousands of asylum seekers on their Web site. However, it hasn't told refugee applicants what it plans to do about having put them in danger. Asylum seekers held at the Villawood detention centre in Sydney allege they were coerced into signing for receipt of the letter.
A judge has called for the removal of mandatory sentences for people smugglers, but the goverment has declined.
An independent audit of the ABC's coverage of asylum seekers found that 93 out of 97 stories examined were presented in an unbiased fashion.
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, who is visiting the UK, stumbled through a BBC Radio 4 interview on refugees with a mixture of porkies and blunders.
