Australian Manus Island guards found naked with local woman sent home before drug investigation, PNG police say: "A woman found naked in a room with three Australian Manus Island guards says she was drugged and raped, according to local MP Ronnie Knight... [PNG Police] have called on Australia to respect the country's sovereignty after the three Australians were sent home before police could investigate." (27 July) The men were employed by Wilson Security; the woman also worked at the centre. The Manus Island police commander dismissed the Immigration Department's claim that they knew about, and agreed to, the men's removal to Australia: "that's a total lie".

The MI police commander threatened to arrest the staff responsible for the accused rapists' deportation: "Within the period of two weeks, they haven't done anything about it. They did not let police know about it. They did not report the incident to the police for a formal report. They have done nothing all." Ronnie Knight pointed out that the Australian and New Zealand suspects in Reza Berati's murder have also not been located or charged. The Australian Lawyers Alliance have raised concerns about the Department's apparent interference in the police investigation.

PNG Prime Minister Peter O'Neill cracks down on Manus detention centre's Australian staff: "[Transfield] is allowing drunken staff to misbehave, the Papua New Guinea government says, ordering its own officials to intervene after Australian workers allegedly sexually assaulted a local female employee. Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has announced he will impose a "zero tolerance" approach to alcohol and drugs at the centre, including regular substance testing, to ensure an alcohol ban there is properly enforced." Manus Island detention centre guard 'found beaten and drowned': "A Papua New Guinean security guard who worked at the Manus Island detention centre was allegedly murdered over the weekend and another had his hand chopped off in a machete attack, police say." (27 July)

Manus Island: Rejected asylum seekers told they will be deported; stateless face possible transfer to 'correctional institutions': "Asylum seekers have been told they have the right to have a lawyer present at the interviews, but it is not clear how the men would arrange such representation."
