Fund the #LetThemStay Front Line - the Darwin Asylum Seeker Support and Advocacy Network needs funds to help 140 people in Darwin's Wickham Point detention centre at risk of return to Nauru, including 50 children.

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, Peter O'Neill, spoke at the National Press Club in Canberra yesterday. Regarding resettling the 916 refugees and asylum seekers detained on Manus Island, most of whose claims have now been processed, he said: "Who is going to pay for it? Certainly the PNG government does not have the resources to resettle the refugees." So far only six refugees have been resettled in PNG, with about 50 more trapped in the transit centre. Mr O'Neill also expressed concerns that the damage the centre had caused to PNG's international reputation, with reports of lawlessness and violence on the island, and about contractors at the detention centre being whisked out of the country before they could face criminal charges.

Turnbull Government accused of ignoring PNG human rights abuses to preserve Manus Island detention centre deal (ABC, 24 November 2015) "An Australian Federal Police officer, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the Government is ignoring extra-judicial killings and rampant corruption in the PNG police force because of sensitivities around the Manus Island detention centre. The AFP's mission in PNG is to help local police improve standards, but the officer said he'd been shocked by the scale of corruption and human rights abuses committed by the Royal PNG Constabulary (RPNGC). 'The RPNGC were essentially murdering people, raping people, burning villages down,' he said."

Australia's 'beautiful prison' in Papua New Guinea (BBC Persian, 18 February 2015). "'It was totally degrading and humiliating. The stench of faeces, it's unbearably hot - and you've got mosquitoes.' Detainees contracted malaria and typhoid, which was aggravated by a regular lack of toilet paper and running water. 'Every day I saw asylum seekers humiliated by staff. We'd have a lot of stereotyping, a lot of racism, ill-treatment. I saw quite a few times men attempt suicide, self-harm, or just sit down and scream, yell or cry.'
