Fred Phelps has made a fatal error. He's planning to picket Comic Con. Somehow, somehow, we have to convince the WBC to make a sign that says GOD HATES IANTO. The result would be like a G20 protest, only far, far more violent.

He claims that comics fans are worshipping Superman and Batman (heh!) instead of Jesus, so they need to be stamped out. Also, some comics fans (and even some comic characters) are openly gay, and accepted by the community, and God hates them (and, of course, Ph#lps has to do God's hating for him). I think he's also somewhat scandalized by the skimpy outfits worn by female characters and fans.

Given the suspicions about his sexuality it's probably the tight lycra the male superheroes wear getting him hot and bothered.

Please God, keep him away from Star Trek conventions. Now that is the worship of false idols. ;-)

In one of the ST:TOS novels (probably Sarek, logically enough), there's a scene where Ambassador Sarek, still relatively new to Earth, is being "interviewed" by a group of Christian fundamentalists, who ask him whether he adheres to various tenets of their faith. He asks them if they obey all of the rules set forth in the Bible, and they assure him that they do. Then he asks them if they go outside the city limits and dig a hole with a paddle every time they need to relieve themselves...

A group of "Vulcans" would make short work of the WBC. Pity they wouldn't understand it.

Have to admit, I was quite scandalised by the skimpy outfits worn by some of the cosplayers at the London Film and Comic Con last Saturday...

In a good way.

A very good way.

The burly dragged-up Wonderwoman collecting for charity was my favourite though.

I hope that someone in San Diego organizes one of those schemes where, for every minute of picketing by the WBC, a certain amount of money gets donated to a GLBTQ center or an AIDS charity. And I hope that every cosplayer and furry at the con stops by to give ole Fred a great big wet smooch right on the mouth. (Although sneaking in just one "GOD HATES FURRIES" sign would work, too.)

The scheme's in place - in fact, it's how I heard about it!

Someone's mocked up a sign that says GOD HATES DOCTOR/ROSE SHIPPING. That, too, would be a viable Armageddon trigger.

Oh, I'm so glad! (Although it would be fun to see him threatened with "yiffing"...)

In a touch of seriousness, I found this essay by his estranged son Nate to be informative but terrifying. Dear Gods, to grow up in a household like that!

I would make a clever comment here, but I'm too distracted by that shot of Barrowman with the 300 cosplayer down in the comments and probably need a bit of a lie-down.

Preferably with Barrowman and the 300 cosplayer. Woof. Daddy like.

There's a slightly raunchier photo of that moment, but I have been unable to find it, despite Heraklean efforts.

If I ever do, I'll drop it your way. For archival purposes, of course.

No Ianto refs, but reasonably decent photo gallery here (courtesy of boingboing.net). (http://www.comicsalliance.com/2010/07/22/super-heroes-vs-the-westboro-baptist-church/)
