Hmmm... hearing this news today has certainly made me feel somwhat pleased that John Howard did get back into office for a fourth term. Imagine how smug Howard and Costello could have been when suddenly an ALP government was faced with an immediate rise in interest rates? It would have made the Coalition scare campaign appear to actually have legs to stand on.
At least this way, the general public can see that Howard & Costello were totally talking out of their bottoms these past few months, and that we cannot in fact trust their leadership to maintain low interest rates.
I just feel sorry for the people who fell for their bullshit, and now face the dawning realisation that Howard isn't actually all that he's cracked up to be. I feel damn smug, but I do feel sorry for those poor sods...
I get the impression, from my limited understanding of politics and economics, that governments really don't have much control over the economy - they get praise or blame for it, but really earn neither. A fellow Dem opines that Australia's economy is doing well because of factors in the world economy, rather than because of Howard et al's good management.
