Carmen Lawrence for Shadow Immigration Minister!

Got this in my email - a campaign to ask Labor to appoint pro-refugee MP Carmen Lawrence as Shadow Immigration Minister. What a good idea! I hear her speak at a meeting on refugees and she was terrific. Please, take a moment to email Mr Latham right away - the decision will be made in the next couple of days. (You don't really need to say anything more than "Dear Mr Latham, please appoint Carmen Lawrence as Shadow Immigration Minister.")

Stephen Smith MP just confirmed on Perth ABC Radio that

1) he's put his name forward to replace Simon Crean MP as shadow treasurer;
2) that the ALP Caucus meets next week Friday to decide on the line-up of Shadow Cabinet.

WHAT THIS MAY MEAN IS, that the likely contender for the Immigration Portfolio may well be the current Shadow Minister for Population, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, Laurie Ferguson MP.

LAURIE FERGUSON IN IMMIGRATION?
=============================

I have not much trust in Mr Laurie Ferguson MP as a holder of the Immigration portfolio, if this includes looking after refugees and asylum seekers. Mr Ferguson is on my record as someone who has written to me expressing great disdain for the refugee movement: some time last year he emailed me, suggesting (paraphrased by me) that there would be virtually nothing left of the determination of refugee advocates, if they would live in a street full of refugees.
