Watched the 12" of Return of the King until the wee hours with the excellent Todd. I think some sort of war was going on, but was so hopelessly distracted by the heart-twanging gorgeousness of Pippin that I 'm not really sure. Frodo became more and more beautiful in his suffering, like in the Mad magazine parody of Love Story, but this did not unglue my eyes from the Took. Anyway, happy new year everyone. My new year's resolution is to brush Frank more often to reduce the incidence of hairballs on the carpet.

Ah, Return of the King, the movie where Gandalf thinks:
'Hmm...I've got a sword. And a staff that can do magic. Eh, stuff that, I'll hit orcs with both of 'em.'

Happy new year!

The extended edition actually makes that a bit more clear, to my mind -- Gandalf is actually trying to keep a bit of a low profile early in the battle, because if the witch-king spots him, he's lunch. His actions make sense as those of someone who knows he's completely outgunned, and is just hoping for a moment when he can make a decisive stand...

Mnn...*peers closely at the extended edition she's borrowed from a friend* Oohh yes! You're right.

That did strike me as odd - I wanted to see him chucking a few fireballs around. >:-)

I just like the description of the extended version as 'the 12" '.

I wonder how many younger people would get the reference...

It's all there on the vinyl

Once upon a time only fine music was released on 12" discs; the Beatles used to joke that George Martin was "very 12 inch", ie a proper gentleman. :-)

Happy New Year!
Yes, brushing the cats is on the resolution list here, too.

We are getting a cat. Trying to borrow the neighbours just isn't the same...

Then we'll need the brushing resolution.

Actually you can buy a grooming mitt from pet shops that makes cats really happy. My cat loved it. God I miss her.

I want a Pippin of my very own, dammit.

Especially in uniform with that gorgeous cloak at the end. Or the green weskit at Sam's wedding. Mmm.

The bit where he's in his Minas Tirith clobber and makes himself cry by singing. Egad.

The song! The song!

The whole turnaround--from dancing on the table with Merry in Rohan to sitting there quietly with the other three hobbits in the Green Dragon at the very end--makes me want to sob every time.

I started blubbing in the cinema when he was separated from Merry (and kind of didn't stop, really, until the film ended for the eighth time. :-)

Yeah, that sounds about like what I did...separating Pippin from Merry is Wrong on a scale of Really, Really Wrong.

(And yes, what were all those false endings about? Did PJ think it'd be fun to psych out his audience? "Fooled you again! Muhahaha!")

*applause*

There should have been more hobbit!piling at the end, though.

hobbit!piling

Is that the thing where they all jump on the bed and boing up and down together?

Oh yes. Hobbits: the ultimate cuddlers of Middle-Earth.

They missed putting in the best bit at the end, dagnamit.

For all those jovial chums who read books - the Shire was meant to get liberated!

Oh yeah - that stuff ended up in Galadriel's bowl of H2O, didn't it?
