With our recent discussion of "femininity" in mind, two snippets:

Femininity back in fashion. Specifically, "Prada has long been the house that lets women be women rather than squeezing them into impossibly tight trousers and mini skirts that only skinny teenagers should wear." (However, there can't be one size 14 in the parade of zombies illustrating the item.)

From Fred Pohl's story Generations in the September 2005 Asimov's:

We went there in her car because it was a Beamer convertible and a lot more comfortable than my old Corolla, but she politely asked me to do the driving and didn't criticize when I did.

This puzzled me - I assume she had him drive because that's the man's job on a date.

Maybe she just wanted to get plastered...

Wow, all those dresses are regency-waisted. My ballgown is in fashion! Hurrah!

Um...I mean...yes, skinny models, wrong and bad.

He he! Half your luck!

Is a regency waist that ribbon they put under the breasts so that when I try to put the dress on, it gets stuck one-tenth of the way down? :-)

That's the one - it's a waistline that goes just under the bust, giving you great cleavage and an elegant, flowing skirt that hides any awkward movement so that you appear to glide... I love it, but when it's done wrong it just looks like maternity wear...

Looks _stunning_ on Emma Thompson. (On me it looks like a lady in her underwear with a dress on her head. :-)

I think you need to put the dress on first and then tighten up the ribbon. o_O

Alas, it comes sewn on. :-)

That's just silly. Well... I guess it's probably to keep the shape of the skirt without too much gathering. But it wouldn't be too hard to make one where the ribbon actually acted as a closure...

Says the recent regency dressmaker...

Trouble with that is that when you pull the waistband tight, you gather the material of the skirt, making it flounce out instead of fall elegantly straight, giving the above-mentioned effect of maternity-wear. The best way is to have a long zip at the back, and to not use too flouncy a material (she says too late - the gown didn't sell).

*grin* Me: Monday, jeans and a t-shirt. Tuesday, jeans and a t-shirt. You can probably fill in the rest of the week. :-) Occasionally there is a shirt, even a BLOUSE!, thanks to the local laundrette.

I <3 jewellery. Just got some new red-and-black earrings! Funky. Must wear them tonight when we go to the haunted Quarantine Station.

If I was stretched out until I was tall and thin, I'd have a tasty green frock like the one Maid Marian wears in Robin of Sherwood, which can be hitched up to reveal practical leggings underneath!

Either that or my wedding dress and a broadsword.

How about you? :-)
