... Kimba the White Lion is visiting Paris. Cameo by Astroboy.

ETA: Speedy Cheetah attacks Kimba, whose dad offed his granddad. But no! As Kimba explains, he was trapped by Irish washerwomen in the sewers of Paris, where he encountered Grandfather Quasimodo, escaped from the circus. Quasimodo was gunned down by the police pretended to be gunned down by the police. For some reason, Speedy doesn't believe Kimba's account. Anyway in the end they're all friends and what appears to be the entire fauna of East Africa visits the World's Fair. Every word of this is true.

Earlier I stood on poor Frank's paw, really hard, as I was wearing shoes and didn't realise until he made an awful sound. I apologised with a cuddle and paw check (seems fine). Do you think they understand, in some sense, when we apologise?

I firmly believe cats, as well as many other animals, understand the basics of accidents and apologies, especially when it comes to us gangly two-leggers.
Whether they accept the apologies is another matter.

If one of mine seems in some distress, the other will come over and wash them in what can only be a comforting gesture. I think they do. :)

This is a pretty common Tezuka-ism, actually. He had several set characters that kept reappearing (Mr. Mustachio from Astro Boy even appears in Buddha!). Indeed, during Buddha there is a scene where one character (I forget whom) is delerious with fever, whilst another character is diagnosing him, for one panel the second character actually appears as Tezuka's rogue doctor character Black Jack!

Black Jack! Yay!

I really don't know anything more about Black Jack than that one episode of Astro Boy where he guest-starred (and was extremely cool and saved the day, and it's always been one of my favourite episodes). I should do something about that.

I have a copy of Manga Vizion (Viz Comics' sampler magazine, in which they publish a chapter of several different serials in order to get people hooked) that has a Black Jack story in it.

The formula, if I can judge it from one story, seems to be that Jack saves someone's life or livelihood with surgical skill bordering on miraculous. It was poignant and a bit weepy. And our hero is dark and mysterious and has a scar on his face but seems to be a nice guy.

Daddy Walrus was in it too - I just couldn't place him. It's been yonx since I watched the 1980s Boystro-ass!

Random anecdote: I came to '80s Astro Boy years before I knew anything about Little Orphan Annie, so I did an impressive double-take the first time I heard the name of her rich benefactor...
