I'm just having a look at a book called Fat Politics by J. Eric Oliver, which challenges the idea that there's an "epidemic" of obesity in the US, and that obesity is the cause of many health problems. Oliver argues that fat is sometimes (but not always) a symptom of unhealthy eating and lack of exercise. In particular, he challenges the link between fat and Type II Diabetes; for example, he cites a study which found that exercise reduced the likelihood of developing diabetes, and the mortality from diabetes, whether or not there was weight loss as well.
This gave me a sharp stab of hope after a bad day. I've begun to exercise more seriously, taking long walks. Now losing weight is bloody hard - but walking is easy. Especially with my little friend the iPod Shuffle. I may yet live long enough to be the scary old lady down the road with all the cats - you watch me.
Oh, and this is Smooshie McSmooshersons. :-)
