Remember these fuckers?

Mercy Ministries admits claims were false
Former directors of Mercy Ministries yesterday admitted the evangelical Christian organisation had engaged in false, misleading and deceptive conduct by wrongly claiming their residential care programs were free and included support from psychologists, dietitians, general practitioners and counsellors.

The admission is part of an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission ruling, after an 18-month investigation into complaints from former residents who were forced to undergo exorcisms and use prayer to treat serious health problems such as bipolar disorder and anorexia.

Targeting girls and women aged 16 to 28, Mercy Ministries also claimed - on its website and in advertising material distributed in Gloria Jeans cafes around the country - that its program was free, yet a Herald investigation revealed residents had to sign over their Centrelink benefits during their stay.

The ACCC ordered the former directors to pay $1050 to each of the 110 young women who took part in their programs from January 2005 to June last year, the total being $118,154. They have also agreed to attend annual trade practices compliance training for three years.
They're just lucky they didn't kill someone. Can't they be prosecuted for more than just false advertising?

Commentary on the successful LHC switch-on here and here. [livejournal.com profile] irritant01 informs me that, sadly, an RSS feed is not available for the latter. btw, anyone got any idea what a "deSitter space transition" is?

Never mind the strangelets, have some Torchwood SPOILERS in the form of creepy as hell footage of location filming.

Meanwhile back in reality - specifically, in my other home turf, Montgomery County MD - transgender civil rights are safe with the failure of a dodgy petition.

And in Australian news: Homeless will get a place to call their own: "Common Ground Sydney... is looking for a site suitable to be turned into units for about 100 chronically homeless people and some low-paid workers. It aims to improve on what homeless people are usually offered in Australia - a few nights in a crisis shelter, "transitional" housing or a berth on a housing department waiting list. Some people alternate from park bench to night refuge for years. They cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars in services that assist them but do not end their homelessness."

Mercy Ministries complained to the Press Council about the SMH's expose, but their complaint was dismissed.

"Bible literacy is slipping and not just among atheists."

ETA: Australian women working in casual or contract jobs are up to 10 times more likely to be sexually harassed. "... the findings were part of a growing body of evidence that "precarious employment" was linked to a variety of adverse working conditions, and to poorer mental and physical health for the workers."

Unnatural History review yay. *sings "Glory Days"*

[livejournal.com profile] crabby_lioness has thoughts on families in the 51st Century.

Mercy Ministries closes QLD house, but its Sydney house is still operating. As you'll recall, MM isolates young women, takes their money, and uses exorcism and bullying to "treat" their mental illness. Keep right on boycotting Gloria Jean's.

Mass appeals to educated, older women. "The survey found 61 per cent of Catholics who attended Mass aged 15 and over were female, 28 per cent had a degree or a higher qualification and 68 per cent were married." (Question is, what percentage of Catholic women, and Australian women overall, have a degree?)

I know you'll all be amazed by Mercy Ministries' attitude to lesbianism, with young women resident in their program not just prohibited from changing in front of each other, but from touching each other in any way, or telling each other why they're in the program. Women who become friends are made to sign "separation contracts". Of course, there's more to this than homophobia: it leaves the victims totally reliant on the program for emotional support.

Gloria Jean's funds Mercy Ministries to the tune of $150,000-$170,000 a year, plus donations from customers.

I seem to be all militant about mental illness at the moment. Good-oh.

The SMH asked readers for their comments on the Mercy Ministries scandal, specifically on whether scripture had a role to play in psychiatry. Amongst more sensible remarks - many from Christians appalled by the abuse - one note kept repeating itself: religion is mental illness. No, it's not, and fuck you for playing.

Apparently, LJ recently suppressed a bunch of interests which appeared on the "popular interests" list, including depression. Now, I am generally less pissed off with LJ's random shenanigans than most users, probably because the protesting LJers often act like people you would never want to be in the same room with. This, however, pisses me off. At least there's some recognisable reason to hide interests like "sex", "porn", or "bondage", but "depression" wtf? Are they worried shareholders will think the place is gloomy? Or is it just that they'd really rather keep it in the closet? Just you try, fuckers. *brandishes mop* (ETA: more info.)

ETA: Oh joy. Abuse of women rife in psychiatric wards.

Complex ties link Mercy Ministries to Hillsong and Gloria Jean's. Despite the expose, Gloria Jean's will continue to financially support Mercy Ministries, although other sponsors have quickly cut their ties.

Centrelink and the Australian Medical Association investigate.

More victims come forward.

Discussing atheism with a mate, I realised that I'm a naturalist - that is, someone who believes there is a natural and not a supernatural explanation for phenomena.

For example, based on the evidence and on personal experience, I believe that mental illness is caused by physical things that happen in the brain, and not by demons.

According to reports in today's Sydney Morning Herald, "Mercy Ministries" (linked to Hillsong and Gloria Jean's) have been isolating young women with mental illness, including anorexia and bipolar disorder, taking their money, and "treating" them with little or no monitoring from doctors, psychiatrists, or anyone else, doing enormous damage.

I am so angry at this cruel charlatanism I could spit. Please join me in a boygirlcott of Gloria Jean's coffee.
