Turn on the light and watch them run
Mar. 28th, 2011 01:20 pmHere's a turnip for the cooks: the cyberbullying of climate scientists, campaigners, and journalists - an organised, anonymous email campaign of abuse and threats, including (but of course) rape threats. "While the internet is often held up as the instrument of free speech, it is often used for the opposite purpose, to drive people out of the public debate."
If you ever receive something like that, dear reader: keep the email, report it to the abuser's ISP, and if you're worried at all, call the police and ask for their advice. Hell, if you want, publicly post the email, complete with headers. Abusers of all stripes depend on our feeling too embarrassed, anxious, or helpless to do anything but silently acquiesce. But they are never as anonymous as they think they are.
