And look closely at the Doctor, in those first couple of seconds after Rose gets zapped. This is a guy who does everything with words - tricks the baddies, convinces people to change sides or to become heroes, everything. His mouth is moving, but nothing is coming out; there aren't any words to fix this.

Also, between the Ninth Doctor and Jack, there is enough testosterone in this story to make me grow a beard.

ETA: The Doctor can't even hear any more words - the guard's voice fades into nothing.

Another thing that makes Bad Wolf hard on the heart is the build-up.

There wasn't any!

It's actually kind of funny, the way they mock reality television. The Doctor never seems to be in any real danger in the Big Brother house, and Jack's having a ball with the makeover droids. It's a cheery lighthearted romp, and then they do that to us.

That's true -- it didn't take until my second viewing before I heard Jack yelling "YOUR STUPID FREAKING GAME KILLED ROSE!!!"

Jack's "Leave him alone!" gets me in the cockles.

Till, and only till, the moment when he can do something about the problem at hand. At which point he and Jack become a well-oiled machine.
