Huge disappointment and anger over the passing of Prop 8 is understandable, but the blamestorming in some quarters is disgraceful. It was the Mormons! It was the Blacks! As though there are no gay Mormons, as though there are no gay Blacks; as though Mormons didn't fight Prop 8, as though Blacks didn't fight Prop 8 - alongside people of all races, religions, and politics.

Here's what the No On Prop 8 campaign has to say:
"We achieve nothing if we isolate the people who did not stand with us in this fight. We only further divide our state if we attempt to blame people of faith, African American voters, rural communities and others for this loss. We know people of all faiths, races and backgrounds stand with us in our fight to end discrimination, and will continue to do so. Now more than ever it is critical that we work together and respect our differences that make us a diverse and unique society. Only with that understanding will we achieve justice and equality for all."
(To be fair, "Mormons Stole Our Rights" has two good points: it at least acknowledges that gay Mormons exist; and the rather clever idea of challenging the church's tax exempt status on the grounds that its primary activity is lobbying.)

I am grumpy with the Church's massive donations of money AND with obscuring their role in the whole thing. But for all my grouchiness (and I'll still be turning their damn missionaries away at my door), I have to admit that at 2% of the population (and blacks at 6.2% of CA's) the message is patently clear: the No on 8 campaign fell flat on its face and failed to reach the basic population in CA. I'd say we pretty much kerry-edward'ed it. We ran a reactive campaign and let them frame the issues the way they wanted.

It's in the courts now, but honestly, all civil rights have been decided in the courts so far, not held up to a vote. So the groundwork we need to do is get people to accept the court decision (assuming they do the right thing, of course) or work on revising things again, taking copious notes from the Obama campaign strategies...

That said, I'm happy to see the protests in front of the LA Temple. The Church should at least be honest about their lobbying :-P.

I spent an amazing night with a furry blond Mormon and a tub full of bourbon whip cream...

By morning, both were gone; but ahh ... the memories.

(erm... and somewhere out there, the photos, too. Hmm.)

Not sure what the deal is here. Prop 8 passed; I wouldn't have voted for it, I think it's wrong, but I don't live there. Someone voted for it, and I imagine that some of those who voted for it are black, or Mormons, just as I imagine that some of those who voted against it are black, or Mormons. The question is, how many? Some people clearly think there's been a vote swing in one or more demographics - that's their opinion.

I also imagine that many gay Mormons are either in the closet or estranged from the church. I don't think the church of LDS approves of homosexuality.

The challenge to the church of LDS' tax exempt status is a clever tactic, but you seem to be suggesting that the challenge is a good thing. Is this so and if so, why?

Erm. I think it'd be a good idea if you followed some of the links I've posted, or did a bit of Googling , so you've got the background on this before we discuss it.

That is far too much work! I insist that you explain everything for me so that I can disagree with it!

...sorry, possibly time to cut back on the caffeine. Point taken.
