... but I got a letter from my specialist, who's identified some slightly dodgy areas in my innertube, and thinks I may have mild Crohn's disease. On reading which I jumped around hooting.

At this stage, IIUC, Crohn's is a suspicion rather than a diagnosis. I'll find out more, and what are the next steps we'll take, when I see the doc in September.

Wow, Crohn's can be a pain and a half to work around, but at least it would be a diagnosis. I had a flatmate for two years with it; she hated the nutrition drinks & the restrictions on her diet (not to mention the more unpleasent symptoms relating to bathroom matters), but she was able to live fairly normally. If anything, your career as a writer should make dealing with Crohn's easier.

Belatedly - yeah, working from home is a definite advantage! Although this house could really use >1 toilet lol

Luckily, my symptoms are very mild - in fact, IIUC they're mostly caused by the bile acid malabsorption, which would be a side effect of the hypothetical Crohn's.

*Hugs* My Cousin has Crohn's Disease. The medications gives her a very normal life so it is very manageable. My sister, had a similar diagnosis, but they eventually discovered it was a bad gallbladder and Joe Barret's disease. That's manageable with meds too.

I wish you luck. *hugs*. These things take time, I hope they iron it out quickly for you, but it sounds like they're getting results in a lot faster than my sister's situation.

Belatedly - ta for this. I looked up Barrett's Oesophagus. Euw! I didn't know the name for it, but it's what I'm trying to dodge by taking proton energy pills pump inhibitor to quell my gastric reflux. Hmmm, now I wonder if there's any link between the reflux at one end of my stummick and the inflammation at the other end!

A diagnosis would be good. It means they know what's wrong so you can move forward. Even Crohn's is better than not knowing.

Good luck, and hang in there.

I did indeed - I actually wrote to the same specialist a couple of years ago, all excited about that article in New Scientist. He had to gently explain that the magazine focussed on stories at medicine's leading edge, not on things which were necessarily In Stores Now. :) I should raise it with him again when I see him in a couple of weeks' time. (In his reply he encouraged me to come and see him for further tests, which I was still too timid to do - it was only these alarming vitamin and mineral deficiencies that finally drove me to him!)

I have something to show you, btw - an article about the praying mantis in Ancient Egypt.
