Ok, computerheads - help!!! I moved a bunch of System 9 font files (via USB memory stick) to OS X 10.3.5. The new machine won't recognise them at all - it's given them the icons for generic Unix text files, and FontBook and Photoshop can't see them. I don't think this is a font problem, but something to do with shifting files from 9 to X. Anybody got any suggestions??

Have whacked off a few e-mails and am trying it myself. Will let you know what I find out. (the difficulty is finding a OS 9 machine). If you want to e-mail me a few fonts to play with my addy is in my profile.

Your blood's worth bottling! Thanks! I won't be back in the office until Monday, but if you've got any suggestions I'll certainly try them out then. To me it looks a whole lot like when you move a Mac file to a new machine and it loses its file type, which can be restored using ResEdit - at least, that's what I'd do in System 9! Both fonts and Photoshop files seem to have the same problem (ie files in PSD format - TIFs etc all work fine).

Cheers!

At a guess, I'd say your files are missing their resource fork -- a sort of companion piece that contains meta info about the file.

The key here may be the format of your memory stick. Format it on the oldest machine you have, and then read it in the newest. Macs are generally good about backward compatibility.

That sounds likely.
You could also stuff the fonts with Stuffit before you move them to preserve the resource fork.
