Gakked from
motiveforce, it's Bibleman.
I have no reponse to this.
Except to go out at once and tape some episodes of Torahman, who defeats the villain by engaging him or her in a tricky theological debate long enough for Talmudboy to throw his metal yarmulkah and knock the baddie out.

Date: 2004-12-16 06:05 pm (UTC)...and then we suddenly realized, that was "Monkey".
I have no idea why that seems less inherently tacky than a Christian show. Is it because the Buddhist stories being used there are inherently fantabulous and rather funny, but we've been taught to take the Christian mythos Very Seriously And Respectfully Indeed?
There seems to be a certain underlying sobriety to Bibleman which is lacking in "Monkey". (Hmm, sounds like I'm saying its makers were off their face!)

Date: 2004-12-16 06:16 pm (UTC)Yeah, I think the Holy Land faiths are really the only ones that take themselves that seriously.

Date: 2004-12-17 02:50 am (UTC)David Collings did Monkey's voice. I never realised this until Jon pointed it out one day - he'd simply recognised it - and I nearly fell out of my chair.

Date: 2004-12-17 04:36 am (UTC)I just seem to recall a thread on JP a long time ago dicussing Monkey, and the vague description of some of it (boy with monkey's tail with superhuman strength, an impossibly long staff, who rides atop a cloud) had me thinking "Wait a sec, that's Son Goku from Dragonball!" Of course, both borrow from the legend of the Monkey King, Songokuu, but obviously, by the time we got to the period of the manga that on TV was known as Dragonball Z it took a very different direction...
I remember last year seeing images from another anime that based itself on the Monkey King/Songokuu legend that had nothing to do with DBZ...
