Gakked from [livejournal.com profile] motiveforce, it's Bibleman.

I have no reponse to this.

Except to go out at once and tape some episodes of Torahman, who defeats the villain by engaging him or her in a tricky theological debate long enough for Talmudboy to throw his metal yarmulkah and knock the baddie out.

Personally, I was always much more enthralled by the adventures of Chaos Strike Force, as well as the League of Atheists. Much more cutting-edge.

I've been trying to come up with a corny 70s Black superhero to guest star in all this, but so far have only managed to think of the Black Muslim.

Who needs Torahman when we have The Hebrew Hammer (http://www.thehebrewhammer.com/)?

All my non-Jewish mates have tried to drag me to see The Hebrew Hammer. I have avoided it with all my Jewish cringe might!

Maybe I should play Torahman.... with my sidekick Midrashboy

Torahman with his sidekicks the Talmud Squad, who are always arguing among themselves.

I'm picturing a sort of Roger Ramjet thing here.

I re-read "Midrash" this morning over breakfast (I'm going through the Benny books, and realised [again] that I need to make time for the audios).
It was nice to see Brax having to Take Steps. It also reminded me that I want to find the the time to learn Hebrew...

Ahhhh... learing Hebrew. I can read Hebrew really, really well. But after spending 12 years at a Jewish school, it's all French to me. Ha!

And thanks for your nice words about Midrash :-)

Kate and I decided we wanted to see a Buddhist version of Bibleman...

...and then we suddenly realized, that was "Monkey".

I have no idea why that seems less inherently tacky than a Christian show. Is it because the Buddhist stories being used there are inherently fantabulous and rather funny, but we've been taught to take the Christian mythos Very Seriously And Respectfully Indeed?

There seems to be a certain underlying sobriety to Bibleman which is lacking in "Monkey". (Hmm, sounds like I'm saying its makers were off their face!)

If you watch any anime, you'll notice an awful lot of stuff swiped irreverently from other people's religions and mythology. Characters loosely based on deities and suchlike are very common.

Yeah, I think the Holy Land faiths are really the only ones that take themselves that seriously.

Isn't Monkey the show that shares the same basic mythology as Dragonball?

Date: 2004-12-17 02:50 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kateorman.livejournal.com
I believe so! Both based on the novel.

David Collings did Monkey's voice. I never realised this until Jon pointed it out one day - he'd simply recognised it - and I nearly fell out of my chair.

I just seem to recall a thread on JP a long time ago dicussing Monkey, and the vague description of some of it (boy with monkey's tail with superhuman strength, an impossibly long staff, who rides atop a cloud) had me thinking "Wait a sec, that's Son Goku from Dragonball!" Of course, both borrow from the legend of the Monkey King, Songokuu, but obviously, by the time we got to the period of the manga that on TV was known as Dragonball Z it took a very different direction...

I remember last year seeing images from another anime that based itself on the Monkey King/Songokuu legend that had nothing to do with DBZ...
