lizbee's review of Chicks Dig Time Lords claims that I "created an anti-racism community for whites only". That's not true. I've told her so, and asked her to correct her review. What a horrible thing to say.
Hmm. I could read that sentence two ways. If it's that lizbee person's opinion of you, that's one thing, that you're doing the one thing, but not the other. If it's that she's being sarcastic and saying YOU said (first clause of stuff why some people don't like you), but she believes it's /really/ because (second vile clause), then I reiterate myself: What the hell?
*headshake*
I'll be over here with the other opinionated folks in fandom who're blunt and refreshingly so. Y'all're welcome to join us.
Usually a piece of spiteful gossip has got some element of truth in it, even if it's exaggerated or distorted, but I can't work this one out at all. I've never created an anti-racism comm, let alone a whites-only one. seeingred is a personal lj, not a comm, which has had the occasional comment from POC. And I'd been getting into fights in fandom for around twenty years before I even created it!
When I read the comments of that other post, I got a lot of a 'hater' vibe. The commenters seem pre-disposed to think ill of you, like a legion of yes-women, only one of whom was willing to say you had a 'tiny' point somewhere, and seemingly reluctant to even grant that.
I can't really cite a truly informed opinion on these people, but judging on that small slice of reaction, eh. Closed minds, the lot of 'em.
Don't worry, Unexpected!Hugo Weaving still supports you! :)
Yeesh. :( Do you have any idea what actual thing she's referring to that made her say that? (I'm searching for a non-loaded way to say 'something that she misinterpreted, or something that someone else got completely wrong and she took as fact', because I don't know lizbee and am not trying to be awful to her)
I think the people responding to that post didn't understand the context of your quote re communication, either.
I can only assume she means my side journal, seeingred. Which isn't a comm, let alone a whites-only one!
lizbee made a telling deletion in the quote she gave: "So my bluntness shuts down discussion; it's something about myself I want to change." Including the second half of the sentence would have made it clear I was examining my online behaviour, not making excuses for it.
Oh, of course, that makes sense. I nearly forgot you have that! I've had a look a few times at things you've posted there, and it's kind of obvious that it's neither a comm nor for whites only, SIGH. :(
AH. Yes, that's interesting. :( I don't remember any details but do remember vaguely when you were talking about things like that in your LJ; it was pretty clear imo that you were talking about how you do XYZ and that's why *this* happens and you want to change *that* about your methods of communication, etc. etc. At no point did I feel like you were saying that your methods are perfect and everyone else can go hang. Which is what it sounds like, in lizbee's post.
......yeah, that's really, REALLY hard to misinterpret, so I have to assume it was intentional. Dammit. :( I'm sorry about this; you're stuffed, now, which sucks ass. Whether or not you respond further, however rational and diplomatic you are if you do respond, you can't win.
Regarding 'can't win' -- no, you can't win when you're being slagged by a bunch of catty girls who have it in for you (righteously or not). However, what lizbee said is pretty damned close to libel.
LOL. The white girls in the anti-racist movement show their true stripes again. I maintain that most of them are just in this so that they have something to lord over other people. They're not interested in letting people try to make themselves better, they just want a more honourable clique to be part of. And they act like highschool girls in cliques, spreading lies and poison on someone else's say-so (because if she had come up with it herself I can't believe that she'd be stupid enough to look at your journal and think it was whites-only).
If it makes you feel any better, a few hours after posting that review, the author said she was jumping up and down with squee over The Eleventh Hour and landed wrong and broke her toe.
People are made of shit and I hate them. But anyways, for what it's worth, people over at racism_101 don't know who you or lizbee are. If that's comforting. You're not as infamous as you think.
A popular bullying tool is the claim "Everyone hates you, everyone thinks you're a joke". "Everyone" is just the bully and their little group of pals; no-one else in the world actually gives a flying one. :)
I just want to say that I'm sorry you're having to deal with this nonsense. The internet is much too full of obsessive umbrage-collectors looking for a reason to take some umbrage; sometimes when they can't find one they'll just plain make something up.
It's contentless communication, really, like chatting about the weather. "It doesn't necessarily matter if gossip is true or not. Its goal is to change and maintain clusters of people, either by shifting around a social structure or spreading ideas about what is normal behavior." - http://www.livescience.com/strangenews/060731_rumor_mill.html
Er, promise me you won't go back and read the rest of it. Just leave out the threads that I'm involved with, at least. It's nothing but toxic spew. I truly hate myself for ever talking to any of these assholes.
I'm good. Possibly because I'm managing to avoid almost all of the wank I know is going on out there somewhere! :D There was a time when I would have searched the Internet obsessively, terrified that people might be saying mean things about me. These days I understand something about folks who engage in dishonest, malicious gossip: their opinions and statements are worthless.
By now, lizbee (and anyone who's following the discussion) is fully aware that her statement about the "whites only" comm is completely false. I've never created anti-racism comm, and POC have occasionally commented in my side journal seeingred, right from its inception. At this point, the ball's in her court.
Wow, are there some thick skulls over there, as well as hate and lies, and very little reasoning. I remember again now why I avoid general fandom so much.
Or, if you're me, make a little side journal. :) I went back and had a look at some of the very first postings and comments in seeingred, and discovered (a) I made plenty of mistakes :P and (b) some of the earliest comments were made by POC - including the first comment to the first posting! So much for my "whites only" journal...
Well, yeah, you could wade about in the blood of your enemies. :-) I was thinking more "taking my bat and ball and going to create a new community" at the time!
I have to say that the sentence:
She was especially popular in the New Kingdom, and She was one of Ramesses II's patron Deities, Who watched over Him in battle.
so totally didn't surprise me. Talk about a bloke who was full on into the whole conquering thing. And probably got turned on by the idea of a woman up to her thighs in blood and surrounded by dead enemies. And also, you can never have too many Gods on your side...
He'd have loved most of Joss Whedon's stuff. Particularly the ending of Firefly I think.
Now I have a mental picture of Ramesses the Great watching Firefly. We're talking Yul Brynner on a sofa. With Charlton Heston's Moses pinching the remote.
