"There are many superficial generalisations that could be made about low-budget sci-fi, but one of the safest is that it holds little sex appeal for women. Doctor Who in particular is a series with many strengths - by definition, since it has survived all manner of shifts in television fashion to endure the span of 40 years - but in all his long history, the Doctor has rarely been an object of female lust."
OK, to be fair, the interview with David Tennant from The Observer is actually pretty decent, but he he he nonetheless. :-)

Date: 2005-12-12 02:01 am (UTC)But my mum had a huge crush on Tom Baker - which was the reason my childhood was so dominated by Doctor Who merchandise, IMO. In fact, she still goes a bit giggly over him (but only the 1970's version, not the Monarch of the Glen version).
Then there are the companions - all the strapping lads of the William Hartnell & Patrick Troughton years were obvious intended to appeal to the mums.
And, hello? Paul McGann, AKA The Sexy Doctor? The Snogging Doctor?
Why do they think women have been *watching* Doctor Who all these years?
Having said all that, DT is the cutest.

Date: 2005-12-12 09:29 pm (UTC)(which boggles my mind a bit, but then again, I spent 20 years reading mainstream superhero comics, only to be told repeatedly that girls simply didn't do that unless their boyfriends/brothers gave them comics to read, and that I was a freak of nature for going off and getting addicted to them all on my own)

He's younger than I am. The first ever Doctor who's actually younger than I am.
[SFX: SOUND OF CHILDHOOD DREAMS FINALLY SHATTERING UNDER THE STRAIN THAT'S BEEN GROWING FOR 2 WHOLE DECADES]
I swore I'd never let that happen before *I'd* played the role!
