Ahem. Having disgraced myself with versification, now my impressions of the movie, which I've started watching. (I tend to watch stuff in chunks rather than all in one go.) Pleasingly, the dialogue is all right. But there is something cruel about the casting:

Here's Brad Pitt as Achilles. He can't act worth a damn.

On comes Orli as Paris. His character is a total bore, but nonetheless, he pwns Pitt.

On comes Eric Bana as Hector and pwns Orli.

On comes Sean Bean as Odysseus and utterly pwns everyone so far.

And then: OMFG it's PETER O'TOOLE AS PRIAM. THE REST OF YOU CAN JUST PACK UP AND GO HOME. HA HA HA HA.

Ughhhhhhhhhhhh I hated that film so much.

I hate Brad Pitt, but even Pitt > Orli.

Also am I the only person in the world who doesn't like Peter O'Toole? He creeps me out.

The cast of that movie is so very odd. You've got some real lightweights against some very accomplished actors, and the script is just 'wtf?' with the liberties.

Also, llamas?!

it's very dangerous to mix Hollywood and British actors in the same movie. This is especially dangerous if they're playing the baddie, as in RH:POT or that ghastly Musketeers, as they will MAKE OFF WITH THE FUCKING FILM.

How many Hollywood actors were in TROY? Besides Brad Pitt, the ones I can think of (even on the Greek side) were British actors.

Oh, I was speaking of the general phenomenonononononon. Troy's prob is that the main character is at the bottom of the actin' totem pole.

Well, that was one of Troy's problems.

Gutting the actual details (hello, where are the Gods?! You know, the ones who caused the war by way of insulting the Goddess of Discord?) was the other one.

I'm kind of wishing they had done the Odyssey, because Sean Bean would have pwned that...

Thetis shows up briefly, generally as a lady of a certain age who stands around in rockpools all day. Gah.

My problem with Troy is really that Paris really shouldn't be prettier than Helen. Really.

For a great modern retelling of the Iliad, read Christopher Logue's verse version "War Music" (four books so far "the Husbands" "the Kings" "war Music" and "Permanent all day red"

re: brad pitt's acting - sadly, it's not too hard to pwn him in a film. an eight-year-old acted circles around him in interview with the vampire, after all. and then, when i'd just about decided he could act, what with kalifornia and twelve monkeys, his contract with satan runs out and he goes back to being just another pretty face (allegedly) that reads the lines. sad, really.

Erratum. For "pretty face", read "mailbox head".

Perhaps uniquely, Kyla and I really enjoyed Troy. I like the... messiness of it, you might say. No clear good guys or bad guys, people try to redeem themselves and fail, the gods may or may not be taking an interest. It also looks great, has excellent fight scenes and, yes, I enjoy the actors including Pitt.

(I also enjoyed Alexander as well, so am apparently insane.)

I'm taking the piss out of the cast, but it's gorgeous and makes me want to write a novel set in Babylon so much.

I listened to Derek Jacobi reading the Iliad in recent years, which pwns ALL.

What, as opposed to one walking to it?

I enjoyed it too, although personally I thought Eric Bana was the pick. I didn't mind Brad Pitt - his kind of vacant acting came across just right for a demi-god who really didn't need to extend himself to get anywhere.

Exactly. I wouldn't say Brad was the best of the actors, but he fit the role. Eric was great (and their last fight superb).

He does convey a certain vacuity. But if anyone else says something about people remembering all this in a thousand years' time, I shall spew.

My favourite bit so far is Hector headbutting Patroclus. That whole fight is choice, especially when Hector sticks his spear through Patroclus, who irritatedly breaks off the shaft and hits Hector over the head with it.

In this movie, the Trojan Horse should be a virus that mucks up their army-generating software.
